What is Yoga teacher training and is it for you?

What happens in Yoga Teacher training

When we hear about Yoga teacher training, the first thing which comes to our mind is, that it would be yoga training for those interested to teach yoga.

According to Wikipedia  “Yoga teacher training is the training of teachers (and private tutors) of yoga as exercise, consisting mainly of the practice of yoga asanas, leading to certification”

But there is another aspect of YTT. Let us see what happens in a typical Yoga Teacher training.

In a yoga teacher training (YTT), you are generally supposed to spend a considerable time in a yoga school. The ytt period typically starts from 200 hour course which runs for about a month(for beginners) to 500 hours or even more (for advanced level).

In a typical ytt course, you get to learn about various yoga asanas, philosophy and anatomy.

Some schools like Vedic Yoga centre Rishikesh also offer a more composite yoga training which includes meditation, Kriya Yoga, Satsang, etc. Here is a glimpse of some of the typical activities in a Yoga teacher training.

During the training, you spend time staying at the school and practicing yoga for most of the day. This happens for a long stretch of about a month or more. During this time, every day you just practice yoga, discuss yoga and experience yoga. Your daily life schedule is based on yogic principles. Your food is based on yogic diet recommendation. Satsang, mantra chanting, homa, kriya yoga all helps you go deeper into your inner self. Imagine the effect of such a daily routine for a whole month.

In essence what you do in 200 hours yoga teacher training is, one full month of deep yoga practice at a peaceful location, without worrying about anything else. You actually start practicing yoga in your daily life.

This kind of disciplined focus is required if you want to experience and effectively learn anything.

As Tom Althouse says
“Quiet reflection is often the mother of deep understanding. Maintain that peaceful nursery, enabling stillness to speak.”

At one time or another, we’ve all experienced the peace when we are in an atmosphere of silence, away from all the external simulations.

With a focused period of one month or more, ytt programs allows one to go deep in yoga and meditation practice.

So, whether you are looking to share yoga knowledge with the world or want to go deep into yoga and meditation or want to learn on how to achieve inner peace, Yoga Teacher training provides you a good platform to begin your journey.

In essence with a yoga teacher training program:

  1.  You will learn how all the different aspects of yoga will help to bring alignment between your mind, body and breath, so that you can attain peace and harmony in your life. Once you experience this yourself, you will naturally be prepared to share it with others.
  2. You will be given tools on how to share yoga effectively and appropriately with others. In yoga teacher training you learn the correct way for asanas, kriya, etc and the precautions you need to take while performing them. As a yoga teacher/practitioner  you are supposed to know all the aspects so that you/your students do not harm themselves by doing yoga in an incorrect manner. YTT allows you to learn all this in details
  3. YTT is a way to inspire others to also see yoga as a lifestyle through which they can help themselves live a healthier, more balanced life. Once you start applying yoga in your daily life, your way of interacting with others will influence them and inspire them to follow the same path.
  4. YTT helps you understand and apply methods for self-healing. Common disorders such as high blood pressure, back problems, neck problems, breathing problems, constipation, obesity, asthma and others common conditions can be eased through a yoga practice. You will be able to apply these methods to yourself, and through this, inspire others to seek their healing through yoga.
  5. YTT helps you understand the connection between yoga and Ayurveda. At the Vedic Yoga Centre we combine the traditional methods of Vedic yoga with the ancient science of Ayurveda, which is a holistic approach to maintaining overall wellness through a system that rejuvenates both the body and mind, and truly complements the practices of yoga. This knowledge is invaluable for better overall health of body and mind.

At Vedic Yoga Centre, our goal is to help people see Yoga in the Vedic way. Yoga is not just for improving your physical appearance and looks. It is a deep science of connecting your body, mind and soul and ultimately find the union with the Divine. Once you realize the true essence, you will find a ever lasting peace in your mind. And Rishikesh being a land of Rishis offers an immensely conducive environment to go within.
