Shailendra Singh Negi
The courses offered at The Vedic Yoga
Centre are based
on the teachings as experienced through our Senior
Teacher, Shailendra Singh Negi.
Shailendra focuses on the traditional practices of
Vedic Yoga, which utilizes a holistic approach combining the many aspects and techniques in practices.
Our senior yoga teacher, Shailendra Singh Negi, was born in Rishikesh, India, on the banks of the holy river
Ganga at the foot of the Himalayas.
Although Shailendra progressed through the modern education system and completed a University degree in
Accounting, it was not long before he moved away from his profession to follow his passion for a yogic life.
Through his initial experiences with the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, Shailendra became inspired to dedicate
his life to walking the yogic path. His first diploma was earned at the Shukhdevanand Yoga and Nature Cure
College at Rishikesh, followed by studies at the Gurukul University in Haridwar where he successfully attained a
Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Consciousness and Yogic Science. In 2005 he established the Vedic Yoga Centre in
Laxman Jhula, Rishikesh and began his true calling as a teacher. His qualifications include classical yoga
therapy, yoga philosophy, nutrition, naturopathy and Ayurveda therapy.
Shailendra’s motivation is to inspire his students to take responsibility for their own spiritual journey and
make conscious steps for their overall health and wellbeing. He does not set out to impress; his aim is to pass
on the ways in which genuine seekers of peace and tranquility can achieve this much-sought after goal, through
determination and dedicated practice. The content of his spontaneous philosophy classes cannot be read in books,
as his teachings are integrated from his own personal experience as well as communing with sages whose knowledge
has been passed down through generations from the traditional Vedic scriptures.
Shailendra does not practice or teach one specific style of yoga; rather, he focuses on the traditional practice
of Vedic yoga which encompasses a holistic approach, combining its many different aspects, with an overall aim
to help students achieve the capacity for peace and stillness. The main focus of his teachings is the
methodology of making us aware of our inner spiritual roots and how to reach them. Shailendra infuses deep
meaning into each of his practices:
• Asana (movements and postures)
• Pranayama (breathing techniques)
• Kriya (yoga practice through movement to gain awareness of the inner life force)
• Ayurvedic therapy
• Chanting (mantra).
Shailendra teaches that while these practices may work in different ways, the purpose of each one is the same –
to help us awaken our inner consciousness and attain stillness so that we can live mindfully, in the moment, and
attune ourselves to our inner world. Shailendra’s teachings are also devotionally oriented, educating us in
learning how to serve, love and surrender – three characteristics of a truly yogic lifestyle.
“Serve, Love, Surrender – the three values
through the practices at
The Vedic Yoga Centre.”
“The purpose of developing these
characteristics is to help awaken the inner consciousness and to attain stillness so we can live more
mindfully in the moment.”
“Through Shailendra’s teachings, he hopes to inspire
students to take responsibility of their own spiritual journeys and to take conscious steps towards improving
their overall health and wellbeing.”
Students come to Shailendra not just from India but from many other parts of the world, including China, Taiwan,
Israel, Canada, U.S.A, Australia, and also from various European and some African countries.
Shailendra travels the world for many months of the year to teach his traditional style of yoga but he is based
at the Vedic Yoga Centre for much of the time and holds daily yoga classes there.
